Ice Queen Strikes Again With Her Lack of Compassion

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

It was an ordinary work day as I drove to the office on a cold, windy morning. I knew we were expecting ice, sleet and possible rain, but I had been at work numerous times during weather like that, so I didn't think any differently. I lived 35 miles one way to the office from my home in the suburbs. My co-workers and I watched throughout the day as the weather began to deteriorate. The storms were blowing in and hammering our city with ice and the temperatures were plummeting. As news stations encouraged people to stay home and avoid the roads, they were also telling those at work to either prepare for a long night or to get home right away. My boss didn't live far away, so she was not concerned for those of us with a long commute. In fact, she didn't drive herself to work, her husband dropped her off each day. I recall mentioning to her that the weather was worsening and she seemed unphased by my words. Another hour or two passed and the weather further deteriorated and against the weather warnings she continued to watch as we worked. Finally, at 3:00 pm (only an hour and half before my regular work day ended), I got up and said, "I'm heading out now", knowing I may be in trouble for doing so. I left and it took me two and half hours to get home with bridges iced over and traffic a mess. On the hill going into my neighborhood, my car spun out of control, hitting both sides on the embankment and causing significant body damage. While I called my husband to rescue me from the ditch, I was seething with anger. She had kept us there long after weather warnings and it did not end well for those of us with a commute to the suburbs. From that point forward, at any future jobs, I made it clear that if weather was an issue I would not be coming into the office!
