One of my first few jobs, I worked at a Hyper-market in the Human Resource department, which is actually where I met my husband. One of my immediate bosses, Belinda, was very hateful towards most people, especially me. I wasn't sure if she was threatened by the fact that I was still a teenager and worked in a department with ladies that had been in their field for years or if she was just generally an unpleasant person. I didn't know her outside of work, so I couldn't speak to how she was outside of the office. All that I knew was that she was a mean and nasty person in general.
I had gotten pregnant while I was working in that office and after some time my husband had to move jobs so that we were not working in the same group. I was okay with that because he got about a $2.50/hour raise. In those days, that was a really nice raise. Afterall, we were in our late teens and newly married, beginning a family. I welcomed the idea that he could make more money somewhere else. The only problem with that is when things were stressful at work, he wasn't there to buffer or comfort me during my pregnancy.
One day I had been more stressed than normal and began cramping. I was probably 4-5 months pregnant and had already had a prior miscarriage before this pregnancy. I was super sensitive to all aspects, wanting to make sure that I did not miscarry again. After returning to the restroom, discovering that I was bleeding a bit, I asked the HR person if I could go home a bit early. She attempted to counsel me on my attitude and lack of team spirit, while I was sitting in the chair in pain. I could not believe she had taken that very opportunity to address anything with me, adding to my already stressed-out day.
